Engagement Phase

Development of the AU Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Framework
Hosted by ICD - INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION DIRECTORATE
As part of the African Union Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusive, informed, and digitally empowered societies, the AUC—together with UNESCO—is developing a Continental Framework on Information Integrity, Media and Information Literacy (MIL). This initiative is grounded in key continental and global commitments, including the AU’s Continental AI Strategy, the G20 Ministerial Declaration on Digital Inclusion, and decisions by the AU Peace and Security Council linking MIL to peace, democracy, and digital transformation. Importantly, it also responds to the demand articulated during the AU Media Convention (AMC 2024), where stakeholders across Africa underscored the urgency of strengthening media and information literacy as a foundation for resilient, informed, and participatory societies.
To ensure this framework reflects Africa’s diverse realities, opportunities, and challenges, the Information and Communication Directorate, ICD, is conducting a series of stakeholder consultations. Your participation is vital. By contributing your knowledge, experience, and ideas, you will help shape a robust, contextually relevant framework that strengthens MIL policies, promotes responsible digital engagement, and supports the AU’s vision of Agenda 2063.
The following questions are designed to gather insights across sectors—including government, education, media, civil society, technology, and youth. Your responses will guide the development of strategic objectives, thematic priorities, and practical implementation pathways for the future of MIL in Africa.
