The Revision of the Supplementary Act A/SA.1/01/10 on the Protection of Personal Data in the ECOWAS region aims to update and enhance the legal framework governing data protection across the 15 member states. Originally adopted in January 2010, the Act addresses the principles and rules for safeguarding personal data, ensuring that individuals' privacy rights are respected while fostering trust in the digital economy.
Given the rapid advancements in technology, increased data flows, and emerging challenges related to cybersecurity, this revision seeks to align the Act with current international standards and best practices. It will also address new developments such as cross-border data transfers, the role of data protection authorities, and the rights of data subjects. The revised Act is intended to strengthen regional cooperation on data governance and ensure a harmonized approach to privacy and data protection in the ECOWAS region.
Through this revision process, stakeholders are invited to review and provide input on the draft text to ensure it meets the needs of member states and supports the growth of a secure digital ecosystem.
